Hard Facts About What Cause Shingles

Wednesday, May 5th, 2010

Anyone from both genders can get shingles. In fact, it is estimated that about a million Americans get shingles each year. Understanding the facts about what cause shingles can get you on the right track to medication and treatment.

Fact #1: You don’t catch the shingles virus. It just gets reactivated.

Varicella zoster virus is the real cause behind shingles. It is also the same virus that causes chicken pox. When a person gets chicken pox, the virus can hide itself in the body and can be reactivated once the immune system becomes weak.

It is wrong to say you caught the virus from someone having it. You can only get chicken pox from someone who has the shingles virus and who has fresh blisters. Shingles therefore is like another belated but more severe bout of chicken pox.

Facts #2: Shingles may or may not occur.

Those who have had chicken pox do not automatically get shingles. It is estimated though that one in every ten individuals will develop shingles at a later age. It is still not clear whether what cause shingles can cause repeated episodes of shingles. It is believed though that shingles usually happens only once and that a repeat of it is possible but is not always the case.

Fact #3: Shingles virus is not similar to other herpes viruses.

Understanding cause of shingles will lead to the fact that it is caused by a type of herpes virus. This is why shingles is also known as herpes zoster. This does not mean though that what cause shingles can also cause genital herpes or mouth sores. The only reason why they all belong to the herpes group of viruses is because herpes viruses have the ability to infect an individual once and then become dormant for a span of time. They can reactivate only when a there is a trigger.

Fact #4: A weak immune system triggers shingles.

It is not true that you can get chicken pox and shingles and worsen your condition by eating chicken or other allergy inducing food. The real trigger for what cause shingles is a weak immune system. This is the reason why understanding what cause shingles is important for the elderly.

People 50 or 60 and above have a higher risk of manifesting shingles because their immune systems are no longer in top shape. It is also possible though that people with immune deficiencies and those sick with cancer and other serious ailments are also at high risk of developing shingles. Anyone with a weak immune system and has had chicken pox before can also have shingles.

Fact #5: Stress can be a factor that triggers the disease.

It is not entirely correct to say that stress is part of what cause shingles. Stress however can increase the chances of an individual who is prone to shingles to develop it. This is because stress can affect the immune system which can lead to a reactivation of the virus. Normal stress actually serves to activate the immune system. Too much stress however can increase the level of work of the immune system that it may stop responding to ailments like shingles.

Information And Advice For Those With Food Allergies

Friday, April 23rd, 2010

There is plenty of advice for those with food allergies available. Studies recently have indicated that a greater number of people than ever before have this medical condition. Fortunately it need not be a limiting factor in lifestyle or activities. It definitely is necessary, though, to be informed and aware of how to cope with it, and to make sure those you are in contact with also are aware of your needs.

The easiest place to manage your environment is the one you are in most often, your home. Here the first step is in the kitchen, where proper food storage is critical to keeping you free of allergic reactions. Store separately foods and ingredients which are possible sources of problems. This should be done with both fresh and nonperishable foods. Also make sure no contamination is possible from cookware or dishes by cleaning completely after each use.

When shopping for groceries, make sure you read labels on canned goods and other prepared foods. Just reading the ingredient list is not necessarily enough. Some products, though they do not contain allergens themselves, may be processed in the same facility as others that do. This should be stated on the label near the ingredient and nutritional information. If in doubt, contact the manufacturer for this information.

Going to a restaurant may be worrisome in that you have less control over the food you eat and the method of preparation. Here again communication is very important, and your server must be made aware of your needs. Also do not assume that the kitchen staff is aware of your sensitivity, but ask the wait staff to inform them. Most food service places are very helpful and will ensure that your dining experience is free from worry.

When you travel there are many other considerations to be handled, but it should not be overwhelming. Thinking ahead and communicating with people you will be served by is critical. Always inform airline personnel of your requirements, so that any food or snacks served to you will be safe to eat. You can also bring your own food on board, which will make your trip free of worry in that aspect at least.

When you reach your destination, there will be more decisions to be made about local restaurants. Many may have an online presence where you can see their menus as well as get contact information if you have questions about their food or its preparation. The personnel in your hotel can also be of assistance, both by recommending restaurants they are familiar with and also by making arrangements for safe dining on site or in your room.

If, in spite of your best efforts and planning, you do ingest or come in contact with allergens, you need to be prepared for this as well. Whatever remedy you require, whether antihistamine pills or an epinephrine syringe, should always be with you. If required, a letter from your doctor stating you need these medications should also be carried everywhere you might need it. Advice for those with food allergies need not be complicated. It really comes down to being vigilant and making sure others are aware of your condition.

Peanut Allergy Doesn’t Always Have To Be Inherited

Wednesday, April 14th, 2010

If a child suffers from a nut allergy, it’s a nightmare for both them and their parents. Every single bite that enters the child’s mouth must be vetted to ensure it doesn’t contain even a trace. Thus adding hours onto the length of time it takes to go food shopping.

All nut allergies are problematic, but the main one that can result in death an allergy to peanuts. The allergic sensitivity is so high that contact with another person who has been in contact with peanuts can put the sufferers life in peril.

A full blown allergy to peanuts is not usually diagnosed until the child is a toddler of 2, or maybe 3. If there is a history of peanuts allergy’s in the family, don’t give your child anything containing even a trace until they are at least 3.

There are a lot of doctors now telling their patients who are pregnant to stay away from peanuts during their 3rd trimester, whether there is a history of allergy in the family or not.

Here’s the reason that they suggest this; whether you should take heed or not is your decision.

There is a possibility that a peanut protein can go through the placenta and enter the fetus. A separate study has shown that if peanuts or peanut butter are eaten by the expectant mother, their baby’s chances of developing this allergy are greatly increased; by up to 4 times.

Don’t think that you will never be able to eat peanuts or peanut butter ever again. If you nor anyone else in your family suffers from a nut allergy, you can eat them and get the nutritional benefits that they contain.

Stop for just a moment before you panic and throw out all your peanuts and peanut butter, and have a word with your doctor. He will help you come up with an appropriate peanut eating plan for your pregnancy.

Eat Junk Meals As Infrequently As Possible

Monday, March 15th, 2010

Consciousness about what we eat, and how it affects us is growing. By now we have all been taught that eating right, with plenty of fruits and vegetables is good for us. We have also been taught that eating too much fatty foods will give us heart attacks and lead to obesity.

Do you really believe that though? How true are those statements? And how much attention should we actually pay to what we put into our bodies?

I like to remain as healthy as I can be. I try to keep active by working out at least four times a week. I try not to load up on junk food. Of course, try is the key word here.

Like many of you, when I was growing up I had my fair share of junk food. But I turned out fine. Was I just lucky?

Some of the friends I grew up with are already suffering health issues based upon the diet they were accustomed to while growing up. Two are clinically obese, and one has thin parents so I doubt it is genetic. And another friend is suffering from bowel problems.

What sticks out in my mind about these people is that at least two of them had appalling diets while growing up. They would eat out at lunch time daily, drink sugary soft drinks often, and eat sweets whenever they wanted to. Also one of these people smoked, so I am sure that did not help.

I see these problems as being worse with today’s youth. This young generation seems to be following in the footsteps of those who led unhealthy lifestyles years ago, and are now suffering due to that. This way of eating was around when I was young, but it wasn’t nearly as common as it is now.

Yes, eating junk food does affect us negatively. It is not that you cannot eat it, but that if you must eat it, do so in moderation.

There is an obvious gap between the people from the time when I was growing up to this ‘Jamie Oliver’ generation, and our eating habits. The youth today have got to be the most unhealthy generation we have seen in quite some time. However, provided they do not pass these bad habits on to their own kids, and the new health consciousness keeps up, I am sure this will not be a long term problem.
