Good Table Manners For Restaurants

Tuesday, May 18th, 2010

Proper table etiquette in restaurants is just as important as it is at Sunday night dinner. The problem is that many people don’t realize this and if they do choose to throw everything they know of good manners straight out the window when entering the establishment. This is a shame since poor manners reflect directly upon you, your dinner party, and even your country if you are a tourist. Most Canadians understand this so for those that may be visiting or for those that may have forgotten the following is a quick review of what everyone should already know.

We forget that proper table etiquette extends far beyond home. Just because your mother is no where to be seen does not mean that it is OK to throw all of her rules and your manners out of the window. For whatever reason many people do just this especially when going out to eat. One would think that being out in public would only make us want to act more civilized and more socially acceptable but this is just not the case.

So, let us review some basic table manners. One of the major points to remember is to never ever talk with your mouth full of food or drink. Not only is this going to cause a mess but it is also going to be absolutely revolting to your companions and even to the service staff. So do not ask for more drink with your mouth full of salad or bread, it is not only rude but disgusting as well.

That napkin is there for a purpose so use it. You may not be accustomed to cloth napkins so here are some points to remember. If it is a smaller size napkin keep it unfolded and on your lap. Larger napkins are usually folded in half but they are still kept in your lap. Use the napkin to dab at the corner of your mouth and if need be, other areas of your face. Do not use it as a tissue or to clean up spills.

Children are always welcomed in many restaurant and diners. While well behaved children are an absolute delight, those children who are loud, throw things, and are rude are simply tolerated. Do not let your children run the table this is just not acceptable. Would you allow your child to address you rudely so why let the child address the server rudely? Would your child ever throw things on your floor? Do not let the child do it out in public.

Tipping is always a touchy subject and there are many conflicting views on the subject. Generally you will tip 15 to 20 percent but more is always welcomed by your server. If you are attending a business dinner or luncheon and the host is picking up the bill he will also provide the tip. Do not lay anything else on the table as this is considered rude to the host. If it is agreed before hand that everyone is paying their own bill then you must leave a tip. If it is a large party and gratuity is added you are not required to leave anything more but can if the service was exceptional.

Other rules that may be overlooked but certainly should not be include manners that the older generation still adhere to. Serving the women before the men is an important one. While you may rage and war against stereotypical gender rules it is still considered good form to follow this rule. You should also pass to the right. So if you have a family style setting with a large communal salad bowl make sure to take your fair share and pass it on to the right. And always wait until everyone is served their plates before starting in on your meal.

Etiquette and manners are important to our modern society. Without which we will possibly cause the collapse of the civilized world. Proper behavior in restaurants is especially important and reflects well on you and those around you. Tourists are often the ones that forget their manners when visiting different countries. You may see out of town visitors and think to yourself that they are rude and vulgar but maybe they are just not aware of local customs. For example Canadians may find it unusual that Americans want their plates cleared away as their done instead of waiting until the end of the meal. So if you travel be aware of rituals, customs, and other points of manner that you may not be used to. Restaurants are a great place to go and relax for lunch or an evening meal but do not do it with some amount of decency and manners.

There are a variety of places that you can go to purchas your meal, you can choose to eat at home with your family and pets and pick up your food at a grocery store, or you can choose to eat out at a restaurant or fast food place.

Dining Guides And Restaurants The Are Worth Visiting

Tuesday, May 18th, 2010

When you want to eat out in Canada there are several options available to you. But choosing a dining establishment may be a bit confusing, especially when you are in a strange city or want to branch out and try something new. By looking at ratings and reviews of restaurants online you can have help in choosing an establishment through the reviews of others who have already been there.

When you look online you can find these restaurants listed by a star rating. Usually the stars go from one to five. When a customer goes online and writes a review they will assign a star to their review. One star is the lowest rating which is considered poor and a five star rating means the experience was excellent. The ratings are collectively totaled and the overall score for the establishment is given.

The rating system is important as when other people go online to find a place to eat out they look to these reviews to help them in their decision making. A person is more than likely going to try a restaurant if they have received a top star rating. If a restaurant looks good to the user and they are trying to decide between two or three restaurants they will more than likely pass on that establishment if the rating is not good.

Typically the customer service, the cleanliness or the establishment and the quality of the food will be the main factors when people give a review. The food can be good but the customer service may be horrible. This can bring a rating from five stars to three stars. All three play a major part in the rating that is given by those who visit.

However, these are not the only factors that people comment on and rate a restaurant on. A factor such as the lighting in the dining area can make a difference. The noise level in the place can also be a factor. Even an unruly customer near the person eating who is writing a review can make a difference with a restaurant’s review.

Reading the reviews along with a low rating will tell you why the customer felt strongly about leaving a remark. You can expect that not everyone will love a restaurant but you can get a strong gage of how an establishment is doing. You can look at everyone as a critic and make your own decision and even become a reviewer yourself and give your best and worst comments online for Canadian restaurants.

When you are looking for a great place to eat try a dining guide online by the city and style of eating you want. For example, if you are in Toronto and want Indian cuisine do a search for Indian restaurants Toronto. A list of individual sites will come up along with dining guides. Look at the guides and see what others have to say about the restaurants that come up.

When you are in Canada and you want a new restaurant in your city or the city you are visiting check online and see what others have to say about restaurants in that town. Try something new or visit a regular restaurant you have visited before. And if you like a place, take a moment to write a review and let others know how great it is.

There are a variety of places that you can go to purchas your meal, you can choose to eat at home with your family and pets and pick up your food at a grocery store, or you can choose to eat out at a restaurant or fast food place.

Regardless Our Economic Woos, Good Restaurants Will Still Survive

Tuesday, May 18th, 2010

The economy is in the dumps. It seems that is all we hear or read about these days. It jumps out at us while we watch television and there when we turn on the radio in the car and it is in our face when we boot up to check e-mail. About the only thing we can afford to do to entertain the family is go out to restaurants. Even in a bad economy, we will still have to wait if we go to a good one.

When money is tight, families as well as businesses perform a thorough review of expenses, looking for the low hanging fruit that can be eliminated with the least impact on our lifestyles. This enduring recession has had a dramatic affect on nearly very portion of the leisure and daily activities engaged in by average American families. Seemingly sacrosanct events like television newspapers and magazines have been hard hit with lost or reduced subscriptions. But eventually, every family will find a way to save enough for some relaxing family time. With travel and theme parks entering the too expensive arena, going out for dinner becomes a palatable and enjoyable alternative.

There is a practical reason that we will always need places to dine; regardless the status of your entertainment budget, we all have to eat. It makes good sense if we have to cut back on the number of times that we plan to go out for dinner, that we select the places that are truly a treat for the whole family. It will not be successful if we chose a place that only some of us like, that would be punishment for the others, so we focus on the places all of us enjoy.

There are wide range of places one can enjoy with family no matter what the taste. There are all you can eat buffets that provide a large assortment of choices. Some of these places have down-home fried chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy right next to the sushi bar. About the only thing to worry about in these places is eating too much, which can be a serious problem. One of the best parts is everybody in the family can find something they want to eat.

There is also the matter of ambiance; fast food places do not always satisfy the need for a dining experience. This is the time to do a little homework and perhaps find a way to gain some advantage from this otherwise dismal economy. Just like families, businesses are suffering from the less frequent dining out frugality that has swept the nation. In response, there are some clever and rewarding ways businesses are vying for the reduced spending dollar. Eateries are offering manager specials, package dinner experiences and even buy one get one free coupons to entice patronage.

Another arena that is affected by the economy is the business trip. More often than not, companies try to use on line meeting capabilities, video conferences or just phone calls to reduce the travel budget. Still there will be times when there is no substitute for meeting face to face with clients. The traveling business man now has no choice but to eat out. Finding a recognized franchise of a similar chain to one in the home town is always a welcome relief. There is enough to think about on business trips without also having to make dinner another decision making event.

If the trip is sufficiently long that the mode of transport requires a flight, the eating situation becomes even more dire. People have made sport of airline dining for years, but with the efforts to cut costs these days, even the bad old days of tiny meals and flimsy plastic forks and knives sound luxurious. One is luck to have the opportunity to purchase a snack on most flights today, so unless one has a thing for airport food, one needs to web search the area for a place to eat before leaving on the trip.

Taking the family or going out oneself for business, restaurants will always serve an important need in our lives. We often find one or two places the whole family can enjoy; we are rewarded by their good business, they are rewarded with our patronage. This symbiotic relationship develops in good times, and perseveres through the difficult times. It is a testament to the value of solid business principles that the family feels comfortable patronizing restaurants as a means of entertainment and a way to support the economy.

There are a variety of places that you can go to purchas your meal, you can choose to eat at home with your family and pets and pick up your food at a grocery store, or you can choose to eat out at a restaurant or fast food place.

A Brief Guide To The Xi’an Great Mosque And Muslim Quarter

Monday, May 17th, 2010

The area known as The Muslim Quarter is one of the oldest parts of the city of Xian and is home to Xian Great Mosque. Visitors to this part of Xian will find that most of the people here have been born, lived and will die here without ever having stepped foot into any other part of the city!

The history surrounding The Muslim Quarter is a colorful and interesting tale. It is recorded by way of Imperial Records that Chinese Muslims (also known as Hui) have been settled in this area as far back as 732 A. D, around the time that The Xian Great Mosque was being erected. Once the city had established trade links with other Central Asian civilizations, this meant that people from other areas of the continent could come and go to Xian via the area known as the Silk Road.

As time passed, The Xian Great Mosque became more established with more and more people opting to remain in this part of the city. Many foreigners who held the same beliefs and traditions as the Muslims who already occupied the quarter felt that they had something in common and remained in the quarter. Indeed, it is assumed that many of the people who live in this part of Xian today are descended from peoples who have Middle Eastern origins, most likely traders who traveled down from the Silk Road.

If you wish to visit The Xian Great Mosque then it can be found in the middle of the city, with the easiest accessible route leading you out from behind the Drum Tower. You will know when you have reached this unique part of Xian when you hear a different language, smell a different aroma and see people wearing completely different attire from that of the rest of the city. Visitors to this quarter can expect to find a variety of shops, stalls, restaurants and markets, the likes of which cannot be found anywhere else in Xian.

When on a trip to the quarter it is most likely that you will want to see one of the grandest and oldest Muslim buildings to be found in China, The Xian Great Mosque. Originally started in around 732 A. D. Most of the buildings that can be seen nowadays were constructed during the 13th century. This mosque is unlike any other due to the fact that its architecture is mainly of a Chinese style.

There is an amount of Arabic and Islamic decoration to be found on the mosque which helps to identify it as a Muslim building. As well as the main mosque there are a number of other smaller buildings and numerous courtyards. Some of the areas of the mosque are not accessible by the public as they are still used by Muslims to this day.

Since it was originally settled over 1,200 years ago, life in the Muslim quarter of Xian has not changed much, if at all. The community is very close-knit and many of the residents have ancestors who lived in the quarter previously, some as much as 40 generations ago.

In fact, the everyday life of the residents of the quarter is almost identical to that of their ancestors all those years ago. Markets will be swept and cleaned, food will be prepared for the most part of the day and the older generations will relax with a pot of tea and their friends to chatter. This scene is very unique and is exactly as visitors would have found it had they visited the 40 generations previous to today’s one.

The Xian Muslim Quarter is a very popular area to visit whilst on a trip to the city. Many travelers are drawn to this area thanks to its wonderful Xian Great Mosque, exquisite restaurants and friendly people. The shopping experience here is unlike anything else to be found in the city of Xian.

6 Ideas For Your Bond Party Theme

Wednesday, May 12th, 2010

A Bond party theme is one that the boys are going to be in love with. There so much you might do to make this an tremendously memorable occasion. Have a look below for some rousing Bond party theme ideas.

1. This is an opening for the guys to dress as James Bond in a tuxedo or as their preferred James Bond baddie. If you’re tall then Jaws will be extremely amusing. If you some Asian guests then the evil Oddjob will be the bad guy of choice. The girls will be thankful for the uncommon occasion to dress as glamorously as possible. I propose a red or black cocktail dress unless they have a favorite Bond girl in mind.

2. As your buddies turn up, they could admire the Austin Martin that you hired and located in your drive way. Imagine turning up and having an Austin Martin in the driveway of a James Bond Party? Nothing will excite your guests more!

3. Then as they come up to the entrance they can be searched for concealed weaponry by a security guard with Russian accent.

4. I suggest you think about a sub theme such as Casino Royale! For this you could have a few casino games set up such as roulette or poker, also 21 and blackjack. They are fun and easy to learn!

5. Try getting your hands on a number of James Bond movie posters to pin on the walls. Get your hands on some additional Bond connected memorabilia such as a Walther PPK!

6. For drinks, the obvious choice is Martini shaken not stirred. If you have a budget you can have a waiter hand them out on a tray. The food should really be finger buffet foodstuff, however of a good quality. Bond after all is used to the very finest.

You must find additional Bond Party Theme ideas to help you create the best gathering achievable. If you like some great inspiration then the following Bond Party Theme Ideas will help you out!
