My Boss’s Wedding

Thursday, March 11th, 2010

It has been quite some time since I last spotted my boss. Fortunately, I’ve been seeing numerous news from her with the help of social networking sites nowadays. As I recall her, Sharon is the type of girl who would not want to be tied up to somebody as she is happy being free like a bird. All she could care for was to get through with the day’s work. She was the workaholic type for me, though. And when she plays, she is a playaholic since she knows how to party real hard. She loves grunge fashion and she loves rock music.

I really had a difficult time considering her as a manager. She was more like a buddy and a colleague I would see everyday at the office. At work, we weren’t permitted to surf the World Wide Web during work hours. And since she was my manager, I got away with it. I spent a number of hours surfing the internet, saving photographs of my personal favorite super heroes and then print them later on, in full color utilizing the company’s printer which was only a few meters away from me. She knew that and she let me get away with it. Certainly, I dearly loved her for that.

One day, she told me she was leaving because she didn’t like the way of the management. She said there was too much connivance and corruption going on in the office and she didn’t want any part of it. She hugged me and whispered in my ear to be careful with the people around me when she leaves because she won’t be there to protect me anymore. I cried and hugged her for the last time. And then she stepped into the elevator going down. That was the last time I ever saw her.

After several years, a lot of social networking sites have sprung up like mushrooms. Of course, I had to sign up with most of them because I was told that I’ll be able to trace and get in touch with old friends again once they sign up for it as well. And I wasn’t disappointed. I found Sharon in a very popular networking site. I immediately invited her to be in my friends list and she responded at once.

These days, we have already been chatting a lot with the help of the site’s instant messenger application and was I pleasantly surprised just now when she told me she is getting married tomorrow. She will become Mrs. Russ. She showed me their wedding rings via the images she uploaded. They’re like never-ending gold vines. Hers is a little one and a bigger one for her soon-to-be hubby. She showed me her husband’s gifts to her with their portraits attached to it plus the wedding gown for tomorrow’s event. It’s basically stunning. The dress sparkled like a diamond and has a number of gold beads sewn on to the base of the gown. She even showed me the cufflinks she’ll be giving to her groom as a gift. The cufflinks appeared like a couple of platinum disco balls.

She said she selected that design simply because they both love positive music and they both love to dance. I am just extremely happy for. She said we’ll see each other soon and she will introduce her husband, too. Even if I am unable to be at their wedding tomorrow, I am very honored to be one of the first ones to see her gown, their rings, the cufflinks and of course, the bride-to-be.

Mother\’s Day Gifts Ideas

Monday, March 1st, 2010

They say a mother\’s love comes second to God loves; or a mother\’s love is God\’s love being manifested in the world. These are very strong and bold convictions, but history will show us the undeniable importance and honor for mothers, rooting from the very same conviction. The contemporary Mother\’s Day celebration in the United States was created by Anna Jarvis; which later on became a commercialized holiday. This is a probable cause of the increase in sales of Mother\’s Day gifts.

It is in Greece where Mother\’s Day emerged from a festival honoring Cybele, most of the historians claim. Cybele is a great mother of Greek gods. Different kinds of Mother\’s Day gifts were given during the festival for her honor. The festival also lasts for three days from March 15 to March 18. Moreover, the celebration of the festival was held around the Asia Minor and eventually reached Rome.

Furthermore, there is an ancient holiday called Matronalia in Rome. Matronilia is dedicated to Juno, an ancient Roman goddess. She is the mother of Mars, Vulcan, and Minerva. In the early times, it was also referred to as the Feast for Juno. In the pre-contemporary period giving of Mother\’s Day gifts started to be practiced.

The Anglican and Catholic denomination of the Christian religion also hold records of Mother\’s Day celebration. It is observed during the fourth Sunday of the Lent season to commemorate the immeasurable love of the Virgin Mary and in honor of the mother church. It is called the Mothering Sunday or Laetare Sunday in the liturgical calendar. Giving Mother\’s Day gifts and ridding the mothers of their tasks like cleaning the house and cooking mark the observance of this celebration.

In the United States one the earliest calls to celebrate Mother\’s Day was made by Julia Ward Howe, the Mother\’s Day Proclamation. It was written in 1870. Today, Mother\’s Day is celebrated all around the globe in different dates that rages from February (Greece) to December (Indonesia). During these periods, the sales of common Mother\’s Day gifts like flowers and sweets have a significant increase.

Mother\’s Day is a global holiday although observed and celebrated in different dates. The earliest celebration in a year is held every 2nd of February in Greece and 22nd of December being the last which is observed in Indonesia. Whenever we celebrate Mother\’s Day it is important to remember we show our mothers how we truly appreciate them with or without Mother\’s Day gifts.
